Local residual stress evolution of highly irregular thermally grown oxide layer in thermal barrier coatings

چکیده
Local residual stress in thermally grown oxide (TGO) layers is the primary cause of failure thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems, especially TBCs prepared by air plasma spray (APS) with a highly irregular TGO. Herein, distribution and evolution TGO layer APS were investigated as function oxidation time. The was measured from cross-sectional micrographs converted to actual inside coatings before sectioning. exhibited significant inhomogeneity at different locations. Stress conversion occurred across thickness; near yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) component compressive stress, whereas that along bond coat under tensile stress. also discussed. These analyses may provide better understanding mechanism TBCs.

Mathematical Analysis of Microstructural Characterizations for Thermally Grown Oxide Layers in Thermal Barrier Coatings
The thermomechanical properties of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) such as elastic modulus, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansions are determined by pores, cracks, and splat boundaries, which affect the thermoelastic properties of thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer and the fracture behavior in TBCs. The thermoelastic characteristics thus have been investigated through mathem...
متن کاملThe displacement of the thermally grown oxide in thermal barrier systems upon temperature cycling
Models that characterize the displacement instability of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) found in some thermal barrier systems are reviewed, consolidated and extended. It is demonstrated that the simulations are only consistent with the observations whenever the bond coat and TGO both undergo plastic deformation. The TGO yields at the peak temperature, during growth, while the bond coat yields ...
متن کاملStudy on Stress Development in the Phase Transition Layer of Thermal Barrier Coatings
Stress development is one of the significant factors leading to the failure of thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems. In this work, stress development in the two phase mixed zone named phase transition layer (PTL), which grows between the thermally grown oxide (TGO) and the bond coat (BC), is investigated by using two different homogenization models. A constitutive equation of the PTL based on ...
متن کاملMicrostructural investigations of EBPVD thermal barrier coatings
This paper deals with the morphology, constitutive phases and fine microstructures of some EBPVD processed yttria partially stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coatings. This study has been performed by X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. It was shown that the coatings studied were constituted of a single metastable tetragonal t' phase, as expected if one refers...
متن کاملThermophysical properties of thermal barrier coatings
Thin layers of thermal barrier coating (TBCs) are applied to metallic components of heat engines to reduce metal temperatures and to provide environmental protection. This results in increased engine efficiency and prolonged operational life. Of special current interest is the use of TBCs in aircraft engines. The TBCs, often yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), are deposited on nickel or cobalt-ba...
